Nearsightedness is known clinically as myopia. It means that you can see things close up but have difficulty seeing things far away. It occurs because light, which normally focuses directly on your retinas, is focusing instead on the front of your retinas. The most common reason for becoming nearsighted is your genes. If one or both of your parents were nearsighted, it greatly increase the chances that you will be also. However, that is not the only cause of nearsightedness. Less typically, cataracts can lead to it as well as a degeneration of the cornea known as keratoconus. Symptoms of nearsightedness include difficulties driving at night, blurred vision when focusing on far away objects, and headaches from straining your eyes. Additional symptoms to watch our for in children are sitting too close to the television, holding books close to their face when reading, and squinting. Any of those symptoms should prompt you to come in and have an eye exam for yourself ( or your child). Our Sunnyside optical goods are at the ready to help with an array of selections for nearsighted vision correction.
Farsightedness is known clinically as hyperopia. It means you can see things far away but have trouble seeing things that are up close. In the case of farsightedness, light focuses on the back of your retinas instead of directly. Some causes of farsightedness, besides heredity, are retinopathy and eye tumors. Retinopathy is a complication brought on by diabetes. Farsightedness is usually marked by blurred vision when focusing on nearby objects. We’ve all seen someone hold a book as far away from them as possible by extending their arm. This is a good example of being farsighted. Children who have untreated farsightedness may show no interest in reading or find it hard to read; they may have headaches or rub their eyes a lot. Sometimes, they have no symptoms at all.
